Egyptian Inspired Necklaces

I made these for the Opposites Contest [link] which was hosted by Sinister-Starfeesh.

First, I only intended for the colours to be opposites - so black on gold / gold on black but then when I was looking for a design or symbol (based on Egyptian jewellery and/or symbols) to put onto the necklaces, I started looking for signs which could also be seen as "opposites".

The symbol on the gold necklace is "Shen" (or the "Shen Ring") and it represents eternity and protection. The colour gold also symbolises eternity and indestructibility.

Now, technically, there is no real opposite of eternity but I started thinking of things that aren't eternal and decided on 'life'. Now if you believe in life after death then life could be eternal but it is not a continuous circle (which the "Shen" symbol represents) because death interrupts the flow of life...

Therefore, the symbol on the black necklace is "Ankh" and it represents life and death. The colour black symbolises death and, also, resurrection.


I used Jovi air-drying clay to make the necklaces. I then painted them with acrylic paints and finished them off with a layer of gloss varnish. I then put them on black cord with clasps (not seen in the photo).
